Two words that you often don’t see together, acupuncture and gynecology. Although not widely known here in the United States, this practice has been done for thousands of years in China to treat the symptoms of gynecological issues. Below we discuss the practical application of acupuncture Bethesda and its effect on common gynecological problems.

Pinpointing the Issues

Acupuncture strives to relieve ailments specific to women by treating very distinct problems on a case by case basis. Through the use of acupuncture, scientists have proven its effectiveness on multiple women’s health issues including Primary Dysmenorrhea, Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding, and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. Research is now showing considerable progress in other areas and with clinical trials and scientific studies proving the effectiveness of acupuncture on multiple fronts.

90% of Patients Experienced Pain Relief Through Consistent Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been proven effective against the severe pain of Dysmenorrhea by the British Acupuncture Council in a 1987 study of 21 patients. The study revealed that through the use of consistent acupuncture prior to the onset of the menstrual cycle, over 90% had relief from the pain associated with Dysmenorrhea. In addition to pain relief, the patients who received acupuncture reported a decrease in other symptoms such as nausea, headaches, backaches, breast tenderness and fluid retention.

Heavy Uterine Blood Flow Improves Significantly

Most women do not experience the condition known as Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding, being that it typically affects around 10% of women. But acupuncture has proven highly effective in aiding these women. In three separate studies, clinics found at least 80% of those treated for heavy flow had significant improvement (British Acupuncture Council). In addition to the primary concern, the study also concluded that there were additional benefits in the hemoglobin after the acupuncture was administered. The study confirmed the presence of anemia in those with bleeding and following the procedure, tests revealed blood cell counts were at their normal levels. In one of the three studies, it was reported that 86% were completely cured of the ailment.

Pelvic Inflammation Symptoms Treated With Acupuncture

With the increase of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease cases from 20% to 50% in industrialized countries, it is more important than ever to curb the onset of these diseases. In a systematic review of the literature on acupuncture (Medicine (Baltimore). 2018 Mar; 97(13): e0225.) the data shows acupuncture to be safe and effective in pelvic inflammatory disease resulting from non-bacterial infection, neurological dysfunction, autoimmunity, and pelvic floor muscle dysfunction. Other studies have also shown benefits when acupuncture is used in conjunction with Chinese herbs.
